The Polaris Slingshot R is the only three-wheeler in our Miami fleet, and it answers a question nothing else can: what does an open-air drive across the MacArthur Causeway feel like when you have nothing above your head and one wheel behind you? The answer is unlike a convertible, unlike a motorcycle, and unlike anything Ocean Drive sees in a normal week. That is the entire pitch.

2.0-liter Prostar four-cylinder, 203 hp, AutoDrive paddle-shift transmission. The Slingshot weighs less than 1,700 pounds, so the power-to-weight ratio is closer to a sports car than a motorcycle, and the single rear wheel means it pivots on throttle in a way no four-wheeled vehicle does. Top speed is governed at 125 mph. Real-world fun lives in the 30 to 70 range, which is most of what you can do in Miami without a track.

Open-air. Two seats, a small windscreen, a 7-inch infotainment screen running Apple CarPlay, waterproof speakers, and a glovebox. No roof, no doors, no climate control. The seats are weatherproof vinyl, the floors drain, and the Slingshot is rated to drive in rain. Helmets are required by Florida law for both rider and passenger. We provide them.

Front-engine, two front wheels, single rear wheel, exposed cockpit. The Slingshot R looks like something from a Mad Max movie or a video game depending on the angle. We run ours in Volt Orange, which is exactly as loud as the rest of the vehicle. It draws more sidewalk attention than the Lamborghinis, which surprises clients the first time they take it out.

The Slingshot is the most-rented vehicle in our fleet for bachelor and bachelorette parties, group rides through Wynwood and South Beach, and content shoots that need a vehicle that photographs unlike any car. It requires a regular driver's license in Florida (no motorcycle endorsement). Delivery is included. Same-day pickup is usually available except during peak weekends.
